Mass at the Imperial Chapel

J. Gallus, Missa canonica

Mass at the Imperial Chapel:
Jacobus Gallus, Missa canonica

On the third Sunday in Advent, the Chapel Imperial sings the Missa canonica by Jacobus Gallus (c.1550 - 1591).

The Slovenian composer arrived in Austria as a teenager. He spent some time as a chorister (singing boy) in the Viennese Chapel Imperial.
Some of his works were in fact written for the emperor's musicians. The Chapel still performs two of his masses on a regular basis, Missa canonica and Missa ad imitationem Pater noster. Several of his 347 motets are still in the Vienna Boys Choir's repertoire. His "Pueri concinite" was in fact recorded in 2014 for the "Good Shepherds" album.
