In seiner Ansprache sagte Muti:
"Il Minister said wonderful words, and said that it was an honour for the Musikkapelle to have me conducting them in several occasions. I think that I would like to reverse the situation and say that it was an honour for me to conduct the boys and the choir of the Hofmusikkapelle together with the orchestra made by members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Was an honour, is an honour, and it will be an honour because I assure you that I had intention and it is my intention to continue to cooperate with the Hofmusikkapelle."
"To conduct the Hofmusikkapelle is a unique experience - because generally people think, they are children. The most difficult thing is to deal with children. Musicians, even fantastic musicians, like the Wiener Philharmoniker, they forgive conductors - sometimes. Because in the end even the Wiener Philharmoniker are human beings and so, being adults, they know how difficult it is to make good music. To make good music is difficult. To make excellent music, is almost impossible. So they forgive. And that gives conductors the possibility to make music in a human atmosphere.
With children, that is impossible. Because children dont forgive. Why should they? They dont know anything about
the problems of the world, about the problems of life. They are young, they have the world in front of them, they are loved.
And so they expect perfection or they expect indications that are clear, direct. No mistakes, no funny things.
And they realize - that is strange how children realize immediately when something is not right, especially something is not honest. And in music, how many times we have non honest things? Because music is the voice of God, but also a vehicle of show. Can be.
In fact, many times audiences, when a conductor conducts, attract more by the gestures and the hair of the conductor and less by the substance. And children dont care about the hair of the conductor.
They want to hear the truth. Die Wahrheit, as in Zauberflöte. In fact, the first time that I conducted the children, all these boys arriving full of energy, and sometime impertinent, a little bit. They dont care if somebody is famous, or is old. And reading what they were expecting in their eyes was scaring.
But they gave me in all these occasions fantastic emotions. And the greatest, ok, in the St. Peter was a very special occasion, because at St. Peters were all the cardinals, many, many cardinals, and also there were the Cavalieri di Malta, so that St. Peter was resplending, was a splendour in atmosphere that was very impressive - very different from - No. I stop here. I dont want to continue because we have the television.
But anyway, it was very opulent. And actually, against this opulence la verginita, the virginity of the voices of the children, lets put it this way, made a dramatic contrast. And the Coronation Mass of Mozart resounded in a wonderful, fantastic way. And in the evening we had the concert in Santa Cecilia. Same day, in the morning - and the airport in Rome is not the most efficient all the time. And the baggage arrived very, very, very late. So we travelled to Roma, waiting for hours for the baggage, just the time to go to have a quick rehearsal, concert, another concert. And the children were absolutely fantastic. We were a little bit worried about how their voice - in the end, the voice of a child, of a young boy is fragile - and they performed one of the best concerts that I have conducted in my life.
And we are lucky that that performance was at the last moment recorded in Santa Cecilia, just quickly, and I heard the tape. And even if it is not recorded in the highest professional way because we asked at the last moment, there is a record of that incredible programme with music of Fux, Haydn, Schubert.
And the next morning, one of the most difficult and intelligent critics because sometime we have critics that are difficult and stupid, but this time was difficult and intelligent, very difficult, wrote one of the most intelligent and deep articles and the title of the article about the Hofmusikkapelle, the boys was la musica del paradiso, music of the paradise, because that happened."
