J. Mayseder, Mass in E flat,
opus 64
Joseph Mayseder (1789 - 1863) was arguably
the most famous violin virtuoso in 19th century Vienna. The son of an impoverished painter showed his enormous talent early
on. At age 11, he had his first public appearance at the morning concerts in Vienna's Augarten. In 1816, he was made violin
soloist of the Chapel Imperial, and in 1836, he became "Director of Violins" of the court ensemble.
He has a street in Vienna's first district named after him.
His Mass in E flat opus 64 was written in 1848 and received its first performance in the Imperial Chapel that same year. Until 1940, the popular piece was regularly performed. Raimund Lissy, member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chapel Imperial, has rediscovered Mayseder's setting of the Mass ordinary.
