Matinee in Vienna's Konzerthaus
Works by Mozart, Schubert, and Haydn
Choir boys and young men of Chorus Juventus will join forces with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra to perform the ultimate
Viennese programme, conducted by Gerald Wirth. Mozart wrote his third setting of Regina coeli ("Queen of Heaven"), a Marian
antiphon, in Salzburg in 1779; he juxtaposes a four part choir and four soloists. Schubert, an alumnus of the choir, wrote
this setting of the Mass ordinary in the summer of 1816, at the grand old age of 19. The mass was intended for his home parish
of Lichtenthal, then a suburb of Vienna, and dedicated to his first singing teacher, Michael Holzer. Schubert initially scored
it for strings only, to ensure that it could be performed with modest means. He later added two trumpets, timpani, and two
oboes or clarinets for festive occasions, which is how we will perform it on 6 November. The chorus is divided into four parts,
with four corresponding solo voices, which will be sung by choir boys and young soloists from Chorus Juventus. For conductor
Gerald Wirth, it is mixture of favourite music, "The Schubert mass is highly romantic, music to immerse yourself. Plus, for
the boys it is poignant to sing a work by a former choirboy - it creates a special bond to the music."
